Nottingham May Day March
Author:richs

Refugee Forum BannerOver 100 activists and supporters from a number of campaigns joined the May Day march and rally in Nottingham this Saturday.

Midday at the Brewhouse Yard museum grounds saw the start of the May Day activities with various campaign stalls which included NSTWC, and live music. The start of the march, about an hour later, was signalled by a thunderous roar from the big drums of the tremendous Nottingham School of Samba.

Lead by Nottingham Refugee Forum and ably followed up from the rear by Nottingham Stop the War with their spectacular banner the marchers, including Nottingham CND, Greenpeace and Cuba Solidarity wended their way along Castle Boulevard into the busy city centre and back via Standard Hill to the Brewhouse grounds for the final rally.

Marchers were not left to go hungry as Veggies were on hand, as usual, to provide food for the masses..

The crowd were addressed by a selection of speakers from the participating campaigns including Nottingham Refugee Forum, NAIL, AIA, Defy ID and Nottingham Stop the War.

Mark Mariott representing Stop the War reminded us that the money spent on the war in Iraq has detrimental effects on ordinary workers' lives in this country due to cuts in spending on the NHS, housing and pensions.

After some more excellent music from the band the rally was rounded off by a rousing address from Rosie Kane MSP from the Scottish Socialist party.

More music and then as 3.30pm approached the lazy ones amongst us left the hardworking activists to clear up. On behalf of us shirkers I'd like to say a big-thank you to all those, particularly the organsers, who worked hard to make the day so enjoyable.
